Know Your Child

As a first time parent, we want to fullly equip ourselves with the right information in rearing our kids. I scoured the net and interviewed parents to ensure that I will be able to provide my child the best care possible.
My hubby and I was able to join a two hour interactive workshop organized by the Art of Living Foundation held at the Cocolife Building, Ayala Makati last June 18, 2010. The workshop intends to share practical wisdom in understanding the nature of children 0-12 yearls old and enabling paents to deal with day to day ease and joy.
The workshop change my whole perception in dealing with children, particularly on how to discipline them.

Below is a summary of what we've learned:

Nature of children

  • A child smiles 400 times a day.

  • Children are unconditionally happy.

  • Children live at the present.

  • Children are daring in nature.

  • Children are energetic.

  • Children loves to ask questions.
Point to remember:

  • 3F's - FUN, FAIR, & FIRM
It is important to remember the 3 F's in disciplining children. Parents need to be creative in dealing with children's behavior. Like one example given was of a daugther who asked permission from her mom that she will just play outside and be back right away. The daugther however did not come home on time. The next time the daughter asked to play outside. The Mom instead told her daughter to invite her friends over to play. The mother in this case is being fun, fair, and firm. Another situation given is if your kids loves to scribble on the wall. You may opt to tell your child gently that you will provide a specific wall just for her, and say that you will provide her all the colorful pens she would need.

  • PEACE - Positive, Excellence, Ask Questions, Creativity, Ear
Positive approach is important.
When you keep saying NO, that's the time the child stops listening.
Children are energetic. Parents should ensure that child's energy is spent well.
Better to introduce interactive plays rather than introducing electronic gadgets or watching television.
Television is addicting.
Encourage thinking process.
It is not recommended to answer all questions asked but deal with them in a diplomatic way.
Let children do what they want to do but guide them in a nice way.
Always lend an ear to your child.
Spend fun time with your child.
Don't kill a child's creativity. A child's creativie nature is until he/she reaches 8 years old.
Parents may unintentionally transfer their own fears/ phobias to their kids.

We can’t agree more. In addition to a whole store focused on child creativity, The Creativity Institute has lots of free articles on child creative development and the value of play.
